SCARABEUS Event

FINAL DISSEMINATION EVENT OF THE SCARABEUS PROJECT

ABOUT

Supercritical Carbon Dioxide/Alternative Fluids Blends for Efficiency Upgrade of Solar Power Plants - SCARABEUS is a € 5 Million Research and Innovation Action funded by the Horizon Europe programme of the European Commission.

Concentrated Solar Power plants convert solar thermal energy into electricity relying on Rankine cycles running on water/steam. Supercritical power cycles running on Carbon Dioxide have been presented as a replacement for steam cycles, in an attempt to increase the efficiency of CSP plants, thereby enabling significant capital cost reductions due to the smaller solar field needed. Nevertheless, both technologies suffer from a significant efficiency drop when operating in warm environments, with a harmful effect on cost effectiveness.

The SCARABEUS concept presents an innovative concept to overcome this hurdle. The utilization of Carbon Dioxide mixtures (where Carbon Dioxide is blended with a secondary dopant) has the effect to shift the critical temperature of the resulting working fluid, thus enabling condensation and a significant efficiency boost. This enables much lower capital costs thanks to a smaller solar field and Thermal Energy Storage system, more compact power block and reduced Balance of Plant, whilst also bringing about a higher operational flexibility.

The SCARABEUS project aims to demonstrate the concept and to experimentally validate the stability of these (optimal) Carbon Dioxide mixtures and the new heat exchanger (recuperator and condenser) designs developed specifically for the project. These experimental activities will be carried out at a dedicated rig erected at the Technical University of Vienna (Austria).

The SCARABEUS project is coordinated by Politecnico di Milano (Italy) and relies on a very strong consortium comprised of the following beneficiaries:

  • Politecnico di Milano, Italy.
  • Universita degli Studi di Brescia, Italy.
  • City, University of London, United Kingdom.
  • Universidad de Sevilla, Spain.
  • Technische Universitaet Wien, Austria.
  • Baker-Hughes, Italy.
  • Kelvion, France.
  • Quantis, Switzerland.
  • Abengoa Energia, Spain.

REGISTRATION

Target audience

The event is aimed at professionals of industry, academia and governmental institutions with an interest in the energy transition, willing to be acquainted with technical and practical aspects of this innovative power generation technology. The event is focused on Concentrated Solar Power applications but the possibility to expand the field of applications into other areas such as waste heat recovery will also be discussed.

Important – Colocation with ORC 2023

The SCARABEUS event is held in parallel with the 7th International Seminar on Organic Rankine Cycle power systems – ORC 2023 (https://orc-conference.org/ORC2023):

  • Attendees registered for ORC 2023 will have access to the SCARABEUS event held on Wednesday, September 6th.
  • Attendees registered for the SCARABEUS event will have access to the ORC 2023 sessions held on Wednesday (September 6th) but not on Monday and Tuesday (September 4th and 5th).

Registration fee

The SCARABEUS event is sponsored by the European Comission and, hence, there is a single, reduced registration fee of 75€. This fee includes access to the event (see conditions above), coffee and lunch services
